Denis Doyle & Tom Gale at the 2016 under 20s World Championships (Bydgoszcz, Poland)
Tom's lead coach is England Athletics National Coach Mentor Denis Doyle.
Denis is one of the UK's most experienced and successful High Jump coaches. He is an IAAF Level 5 and UKA Level 4 coach and an international speaker on High Jump.
Denis has produced over thirty International athletes, including four Olympians, and has coached with British, Irish and Indian teams at four Olympics and six World Championships.
In less than one year Denis took Tom's PB from 1.96 to 2.18m (+22cm) and transformed Tom from a good club jumper to a World Class athlete.
Denis and Tom work very well as a team and their partnership has achieved the current rankings for Tom at the end of 2016:
- Top of the UK under 20 rankings (10th across all UK age groups)
- 4th in the European under 20 rankings
- 9th place in the WORLD under 20 Championships
Prior to working with Denis, Tom was coached by Team Bath Athletics Club Coach Di Viles.
Di is an experienced Level 3 High Jump Coach and Level 2 Official. She has been coaching for over 30 years and had a real challenge on her hands when she first started coaching Tom; Tom's self-taught technique was very 'unusual' to say the least ! One of the first things Di had to address was to change Tom's run-up so his take-off foot is furthest away from the bar. Once this became the norm Di was able to concentrate on the other technical elements of High Jumping as well as strength and conditioning training. Di did a fantastic job working with Tom and was responsible for introducing Tom to Denis.
